José Cuervo Reserva de la Familia - 2011

Jerónimo López Ramírez, “Dr. Lakra.” - Artist - 2011 Collection - Extra Añejo

The 16th installment of the limited-edition handcrafted wooden box collection is adorned with the artistic styling of 38 year-old (born 1972) Mexican tattoo artist Jerónimo López Ramírez, known in the tattoo community as “Dr. Lakra.”

He is the first artist that transcends the subculture of the tattoo art. "I am not completely in the world of the Tattooing, but I am neither an illustrator. I am on each side and nowhere at the same time", states Jerónimo López. Dr. Lakra started creating tattoo illustrations in 1990, and he discovered that tattooing was a form of art that could be transferred from the skin to a variety of unanimated surfaces. His work has been influenced by comics, flamenco painting and cover sheets of music albums, He works with ideas of sexuality, death and carnal impulses.

While he does not intend to be provocative and silly with his work, he is attracted by morbid curiosity, and considers it a human emotion. Dr. Lakra transforms objects such as vintage posters, Japanese print art, paper glasses and plastic dolls into drawings inspired by the art of tattooing. He combines mystical symbols, skulls, calendar pictures and old advertisements. His work reflects a mixture of traditional tattooing and Mexican graphic art.

His work has been shown in individual exhibitions in galleries in London, Berlin, Tokyo, and of course, Mexico. Additionally, he has been shown at Art Basel, in the Museum of Contemporary Art of Oaxaca and more recently in The Drawing Institute of New York and the Institute of Contemporary Art (ICA) of Boston.

He has participated in more than 50 collective exhibitions in Germany, United Kingdom, Portugal, Spain, United States, France, Italy, Japan, Puerto Rico and Mexico. He has made outstanding contributions tot he exhibitions organized by the Gallery Kurimanzutto of Mexico City. He has collaborated with prominent artists like Gariel Orozco and Boris Viskin; and has been featured in Artforum and Frieze, as well as in diverse books and catalogues of galleries and museums in Austria, Spain, and Mexico.

Over the past 200 years, the Cuervo family has passed on their strong knowledge in the arts of agriculture, distilling and blending from generation to generation to deliver Reserva de la Familia,” said Juan Domingo Beckmann, Executive Director of Casa Cuervo and the 10th generation of Jose Cuervo descendents.

“Each barrel is personally sampled by a member of the Cuervo family in order to preserve its heritage for the entire world to savor.”

In addition to winning several awards and a double gold medal from the 2006 San Francisco World Spirits Competition, Reserva de la Familia is recognized by industry experts as one of the world’s finest spirits. Only a limited number of Reserva de la Familia bottles are produced each year, which makes this prized sipping Tequila a much-desired spirit.

Aged in new French and American charred oak barrels, Reserva de la Familia has a full, mellow taste that combines floral, agave, vanilla, nut and Cognac-like flavors. It is typically sipped just like a cognac ideally in a Tequila tasting glass or a snifter.  Each bottle is carefully assembled by hand, numbered and dated, hand-dipped in wax and then placed in the handcrafted wooden box.
