Consejo Regulador del Tequila - CRT - Culture, Authenticity and Quality in Service

Distintivo T was created in 2003 by the Tequila Regulating Council (Consejo Regulador del Tequila) and the National Chamber of Tequila Industry (Camara Nacional de la Industria Tequilera) with a premise of spreading the authentic culture of tequila and promoting the denomination of origin of the Tequila, Jalisco region.

Awarded service providers must fulfill strict requirements to qualify for one of the three categories ranging from 4 Agaves to 5 Agaves and the Agave de Oro (Golden Agave) representing the highest standards.

In order to receive this highest category of Distintivo T, the establishment must serve a minimum of 60 bottles of authentic certified tequila and at least 3 dishes with tequila as an ingredient. Tequila must be served in Reidel glasses, and there should be a tequila expert on site.

To qualify for the 5 Agaves category, the establishment must serve a minimum of 45 bottles of authentic certified tequila and at least 2 dishes with tequila as an ingredient.

A minimum of 30 bottles of authentic certified tequila and at least 1 dish with tequila as an ingredient are required for the 4 Agaves category.

The menu requirement calling for tequila-containing dishes does not apply to bars not serving food.

In addition to the above conditions, to qualify for any of the three categories of Distintivo T, service providers must also fulfill specific norms as to organization, control and training.

Organization manuals for operation and administrative areas involved in the service of tequila should define the accuracy of the procedures in order to ensure the best quality.

Tequila bottles should be correctly displayed and distinguished by the category (tequila or tequila 100% agave) and type (blanco, joven, reposado and añejo.)

Used bottles must be destroyed and recycled to avoid refilling and adulterating.

All personnel involved in the service of tequila must undergo a training that includes the history, standards and the production process of tequila, along with customer service guidelines.

Establishments interested in certification should request an evaluation by a Verification Unit approved by the Tequila Regulating Council. In order to receive the Agave de Oro category 100% of the requirements must be fulfilled; for the 5 Agaves category – 95% and for 4 Agaves – 90%.

Distintivo T may be awarded to all types of hotels, restaurants, centers of consumption and points of sale meeting the requirements. Certification is valid for a period of one year.
